Some parents choose to use a Moses basket or bassinet as a small and secure sleeping place for their newborn infant, during the first few months home from hospital.
If you’re considering purchasing one second hand, there are a few questions you should ask:
- How old is it? Older bassinets may not meet current safety standards. Always check that the bars are close enough together to meet modern guidelines, for instance.
- Is it damaged? Check that the wood or cane is intact and not loose or cracked.
After purchasing it’s important to keep in mind that you should:
- Replace the mattress. Although it’s often safe to purchase a second hand Moses basket or bassinet, you should always replace the mattress, no matter how new it is. A mattress can hide a range of germs and microorganisms.
As with all second hand products, it’s important that you are comfortable with the history and condition of the item. If you’re not sure, look elsewhere.
If you’re not sure that a Moses basket or bassinet is the right choice for your family, you may also want to consider a co-sleeping crib or in bed co-sleeper. Alternatively, you may want to choose a full size cot which has a base which can be raised and lowered to suit different ages.
