Although only 10-15% of women experience their waters breaking as the first sign of labor, many women are concerned that they may not know if it happens.
So, if your waters break while you’re in the water, how can you tell? There are a few simple ways:
- You may feel pressure of your amniotic fluid meeting the water, and the sensation as the fluid leaves your body, similar to the feeling you’d get when you urinate.
- Continued leaking of fluid after you finish your bath or shower.
- Ongoing leaking. The best way to identify that you’re leaking amniotic fluid is to dry yourself off, then put a pad in your underwear. If the pad is full within half an hour, it’s highly likely that you’re leaking amniotic fluid.
If you do experience your waters breaking, you don’t need to be concerned as long as the fluid is clear. However if there’s a noticeable colour such as brown or green, it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
95% of women will go into labor spontaneously within 24 hours of their waters breaking. Here is more information about what to do if your waters have broken.
